A question keeps running through my head, "do we give too much life to things that might not be real?" because I find that I always seem to be worrying about one thing or another in my marriage especially, and then living based around those worries or situations I "think" I'm going through. I assume things, or making false accusations...

So I guess my questions are,

Why do we always tend to make mountains out of molehills?

Why can't we live day to day, instead of thinking so much about yesterday and the day before that?

Why do we worry so much about what will happen tomorrow, especially in regards to relationships?

Why do we never want to forgive people for their mistakes?

These may seem like really dumb questions, but I wonder sometimes....If we all put down our worries, and concentrated only on what we can do to better ourselves instead of trying to change other people, wouldn't that lead us one step closer to
having healthier lives in general?

I don't know if any of you will want to reply to this, but I just want to put it out there. Feel free to put your two cents in.

Well I think it all depends.the only time I think of yesterday or day before that (where its in anyway interupting with living today so to speak) is if its not resolved."no closure" left open ended and or even still ongoing.

Pretty much for me If I do worry? Again its open ended and no closure and again especially if its a repeated "theme" ..like "lied to me again" no "security" wont lie again tomorrow because its a "pattern" with not a lot of time to heal in between..

The 3rd one is not me.I do want to forgive people for mistakes but for reasons as stated above they can sometimes make that far more difficult for you .But forgiving someone is like a breath of fresh air to me a "release" and I want to do it.Its not just for them..actually sometimes it isn't for them at all.You can forgive a dead person as an example.

Firstly this is not a "why do we" question because not everyone does this.
I will say that when I was miserable towards the end of my marriage that things looked far bigger than I could cope with but the reality was that things actually were huge. Big big problems.
On an everyday level no I don't turn the small stuff into bug stuff, I just tend to take whatever action is required and move on.

Why can't we live day to day, instead of thinking so much about yesterday and the day before that?

Again not everyone does this. Living in the present is the way I roll. At times there is great reflection on the past or excitement about the future but generally my days are flat out and I stick to thinking in the present.

Why do we worry so much about what will happen tomorrow, especially in regards to relationships?

Not worry about tomorrow with my relationship, excited about the future though.

Why do we never want to forgive people for their mistakes?

This is such an important thing to do not only for them but also for us. I have well and truly forgive the person that hurt me the most in life, it is a liberating feeling and let's you just get on with your life.

It's been said that a short memory for the bad stuff and a long one for the good things is what makes a marriage last. Your idea is the same principle, just in the future.

Along the lines of dallasapple's first comment, it's very difficult for me to "move on" and forgive and forget when the issue never gets resolved...when it gets swept under the rug, when my feelings are invalidated frequently. It's little hurts that add up to one big one eventually...a dismissal of my opinion about something that affects me as much as him, a cold shoulder lasting days that ends abruptly with no explanation, a unilateral change in pre-marital decisions such as how many children to have, constant walking on eggshells to ward off angry outbursts over trivial matters. Then when trying to discuss the issue immediately, I'm told to stop taking things so personally...everyone has a bad day...if I try to bring it up later, I'm accused of holding grudges for every little thing.

For me, this is why it's hard to let go of yesterday and just be happy with today, to just forgive and forget...because to forgive someone for past hurts, it sure as heck would make it much easier if that person would meet half way and acknowledge their contribution to the problem.

I quoted this because I think she says it better than I can. I agree with what I have emboldened. It is the open-ended, no-closure issues which make it so difficult to heal and move forward. My belief is, they know and have experienced this. It is done intentionally. If not, and they once truly loved you and wanted to forgive and be forgiven, they would provide their story, problem or reason. I have not figured out how to forgive when the issues remain.

Edit: I have added this quote from Waking up to life because I agree with this part:

"For me, this is why it's hard to let go of yesterday and just be happy with today, to just forgive and forget...because to forgive someone for past hurts, it sure as heck would make it much easier if that person would meet half way and acknowledge their contribution to the problem."

When you get to the point where you are walking on eggshells. That's not a molehill thats a mountain. I know, I was there and that statement was my deciding factor to save myself and my kids.

We don't HAVE to do any of that. I am convinced that the secret to happiness and contentment is in the "letting go". It is also in living for today, and planning for tomorrow. I think a long time ago, I quit wishing and wondering and hoping and worrying.... especially when it comes to relationships but really, in alot of aspects of life.

I think we can make a choice. To either wallow, or to forge ahead.... and if you can get past the past.... THEN you get to coast.

A few tips... daily inspirations (yay for the internet!), old sayings such as "Count your blessings" etc... there are tons. Find a "mantra"... at one of my hardest times my mantra was that little mole/groundhog thing from Caddyshack singing "I'm alright, nobody worry 'bout me". That was me, finding my own way in spite of some real crap around me.

My point is....it is within you... find it.

That's so sweet of you to say..but I suspect you could have said it just as well..I have met many "wise" people who view things this way or better yet have figured this out.

Heat's winning streak ends at 27 in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) ? The Miami Heat's 27-game winning streak was snapped Wednesday night by the Chicago Bulls, 101-97, when a furious comeback by LeBron James and his teammates fell short.

The Heat finished six games short of the record held by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers.

Luol Deng scored 28 points, Carlos Boozer added 21 points and 17 rebounds, and the Bulls brought the Heat's pursuit of the record to a screeching halt despite another big game from James.

Miami's superstar did all he could to keep the run going, scoring 32 points in a physical final few minutes that saw the MVP even collect a flagrant foul.

The Heat hadn't lost since the Pacers beat them in Indianapolis on Feb. 1. But after grinding out some close wins lately, including a rally from 27 down in Cleveland, they simply came up short down the stretch in this one.

For the better part of two months, they were the NBA's comeback kings. They erased seven double-digit deficits during the streak. They found themselves trailing in the fourth quarter 11 times, and won them all.

Not Wednesday.

And when they walked off the floor in Chicago, they were not happy. Faces were stoic as the Heat trudged toward the locker room. James turned and glared at one fan who grabbed at his head. Meanwhile, the Bulls whooped and slapped hands with anyone they could reach, with some acknowledging that being the team that snapped the streak meant plenty.

It will go down as the second-longest winning streak in the history of American major pro sports, behind only the Lakers. And some of those who helped that 33-game run become reality were openly cheering for the Heat as Miami's streak rolled along, with Jerry West among those saying that he believed the reigning champions had a real shot at pulling the feat off.

The streak began on Super Bowl Sunday in Toronto, a day when Heat players were mildly annoyed about having to miss football's title game. When San Francisco and Baltimore were to be playing, the Heat were to be flying home for a game the following night.

So team officials team changed course, as a surprise.

Miami beat Toronto that afternoon, then stayed in the city several more hours to watch the Super Bowl together, an event highlighted by Shane Battier giving an unplanned speech about appreciating little moments as a team.

For whatever reason, the Heat were unbeatable for nearly the next two months.

And they won games in a number of different ways.

They blew out good teams like the Los Angeles Clippers, Oklahoma City Thunder and the Bulls, then inexplicably struggled with lottery-bound Cleveland, Detroit, Sacramento, Charlotte and Orlando. They rallied from 13 points down in the final 8 minutes to beat Boston, from a 27-point third-quarter hole at Cleveland, and from 11-point deficits against Detroit and Charlotte ? all those coming in a seven-day span, no less.

"There are several teams that can do it," Pistons guard Jose Calderon said, when asked what it would take for someone to beat Miami. "It's difficult to maintain this concentration every day. It will likely take everyone to have a bad day."

Even when those bad days happened, the Heat found ways to win.

A buzzer-beater by James against Orlando. Double-overtime against Sacramento. Huge comebacks. Whatever it took.

"To do something like this, everyone needs to step up," said Battier, who was part of a 32-game winning streak at Duke, a 22-gamer with the Houston Rockets and now played a role in this epic Heat run.

There were times when even the Heat themselves didn't know how long the streak was. Because it was interrupted by the All-Star break, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was surprised when a staff member said something about Miami having won nine in a row. When it was at 24 games, Dwyane Wade made a reference to "23, 24, whatever it is."

They insisted they did not care about it, whatever the number was.

Heat President Pat Riley played for the Lakers team that won 33 in a row, and remained silent throughout Miami's streak, mainly because he rarely gives interviews these days but more so because the official team stance was that it simply did not matter. This season is championship-or-bust for Miami, one where nothing else other than raising yet another Larry O'Brien Trophy will satisfy.

"I understand the history of the game," James said after the streak reached 25. "I appreciate the history of the game. But this team has a bigger goal than winning a number of consecutive games in a row."

Still, the streak will go down as the story of the regular season.

When it started, Miami was 5? games behind San Antonio for the overall NBA lead, only a half-game ahead of New York in the Eastern Conference race, held just a four-game edge over Atlanta in the Southeast Division and were the league's ninth-best road team in terms of winning percentage.

Funny what two months or so without losing can do.

The Heat now sit atop the overall NBA standings, gained 12 games over New York in the East entering Wednesday, put away the Hawks for good several weeks ago and are now, by far, the league's best road team. And with the streak over, all that's left now is getting ready for the postseason.

How To Find Safe Online Business Opportunities | Content for Reprint

Author: Vladimir Mesic | Total views: 131 Comments: 0
Word Count: 989 Date:

There are so many scams on the internet so I understand if you are looking for safe online business opportunities which you can be sure are leading you in the right direction and at least to some sort of success without the lies, fake promises and unrealistic expectations.

Chances are, you have already spent money on some of the make money online products and courses or got involved with one of the thousands of online business opportunities promoted online. The hype sales pages promise you instant money from commissions coming into your bank account while you spend the time doing things you like, lying on the beach drinking a cocktail of your choice, an internet business in a box, push button, just copy and paste, type way to make money with hardly any work involved.

Unfortunately it's getting worse and the number of these types of products is growing daily. There are millions of people who are trying to make extra money online and are falling for these scams. Some will argue that these programs and products are not scams but if you use the criteria of what value is offered to the buyer and what is actually promised in the sales letter or sales video, then most of these online business opportunities are scams.

So what can you do to avoid paying or joining an online business opportunity that will just cost you money or more importantly your time and the risk that you will invest your resources, using outdated techniques and practices which could actually be harmful to your credibility or your success? Here are some important things to consider when searching for safe online business opportunities.

Only consider spending your money with someone who stands openly in front of the offer with their name, real proof of why you should trust him or her. Make sure that when you find out their name to search them in Google and at least look up if they are actually a real person. They should have their personal website, be on places like Linkedin, published something of value and have a positive footprint.

If there is a gorgeous young woman, a hired actress pitching an easy way to riches with a one shoe fits all approach that anyone can do with no experience or website needed, no technical skills needed, no writing needed, then just walk away and don't even bother to look into it. Just remember or write down the website address so you can avoid it in the future but best is to ignore it.

If there are amazing promises of unbelievable earnings and screenshots of those earnings of a zillion dollars and x amount of cents with a lot of mansions, million dollar yachts and offcourse the absolute must of all scam sales pages, a latest model red Ferrari, to mention a few, then just use your mouse productively and get out. This brings me to the next point.

If you've started watching the sales video or sales page and you are not sure about whether to trust this guy, if you click to close the page and get another page asking you to stay on the page for a Special Offer with a discount offered, you try to close it again and there is another discount and another, that is a sure sign that the value of that product is just as low as the discounts on offer. Again not worth wasting your time with that either.

I would recommend that you work on getting real skills and proficiencies first. It is important to first gain the basic knowledge of how things work on the internet. The subject is huge to talk about in this article but understanding the process of owning and hosting your website, content creation, search engine optimization, writing sales copy, traffic generation and many other links in the chain is a start.

However, this general knowledge is just the beginning. You must acquire skills which will enable you to do research and choose your field, register your domain, host your site, know how to optimize your site, add content to it, learn how to drive free and paid traffic , how to monetize your content and so on.

You need to be good at basics before you can go on and achieve great success and. Learn to walk before you can start thinking of participating in the World Athletics Championship.

The problem is people don't want to put in the hard work and gain the necessary skills which are a must to succeed at anything, rather they keep searching for an easy push button solutions and go from one opportunity to another.

The real diamond of information you can take with you from my article here, in my opinion, is that you need to concentrate on getting real online skills. You need to be able to do things like log into your website, change anything you want to it, add more content or change your links and banner ads for example without relying on someone to do that for you. You need to know the technical part of building a list and writing copy.

Believe me, all that requires a lot of work, meaning time which we all in this age have in limited quantities. Here is a thought I'll leave you with regarding safe online business opportunities. There is no such thing as, completely "safe", which is especially true when talking about business in general.

After saying all that, if you have at least some of the skills mentioned here, it will be easy for you to choose safe online business opportunities and work on building a business and not waste your precious time chasing one business opportunity after another.

Vladimir Mesic is an author, webmaster and an offline contractor, applying his gained skills and experience in building businesses in various niches which can help people looking for safe online business opportunities. AT&T to sell BlackBerry Z10 starting March 22

AT&T Inc will start selling the highly anticipated BlackBerry Z10 touchscreen smartphone in the United States on March 22, the company said on Monday, sending BlackBerry shares more than 10 percent higher.

BlackBerry, formerly known as Research In Motion, is hoping the new devices, already on sale in Canada, Britain and more than 20 other countries, will help it win back market share in the United States, which was once a stronghold for the smartphone industry pioneer.

The U.S. launch of the new devices has been delayed due to a longer carrier-testing phase in the country. AT&T said pre-sales of the devices will begin on Tuesday, March 12.

BlackBerry says sales of its new smartphone have been outpacing its expectations so far, but investors are keen to see how it fares in the United States. The company has lost U.S. market share rapidly to Apple Inc's iPhone and a slew of devices powered by Google's Android operating system.

As expected, AT&T said it would sell the devices for $199.99 with a two-year contract. T-Mobile USA said on Friday it planned to start selling the BlackBerry Z10 to its business customers in the United States on Monday.

Verizon Inc, the biggest U.S. wireless carrier, has yet to say when it will start selling the Z10. The Z10 and the soon to be launched Q10, which will come with BlackBerry's traditional physical keyboard, are powered by the new BlackBerry 10, or BB10 operating system.

BlackBerry shares were up more than 10 percent at $14.37 in mid-morning Nasdaq trading on Monday, while its Toronto-listed stock rose by a similar margin to C$14.78.

China's Alibaba names Jonathan Lu as new CEO | Firstpost

Beijing: Alibaba Group, one of the world?s biggest e-commerce companies, said Monday its executive vice president will succeed founder Jack Ma as chief executive.

Ma, 48, announced in January he was stepping down as CEO to make way for younger leaders. He stayed on as chairman.

Jonathan Lu Zhaoxi, a 13-year veteran of the company, will take over in May as CEO, said the company, based in the eastern city of Hangzhou.

?He is passionate about and familiar with the group?s various businesses,? said Ma in the announcement. ?Not only has he contributed to building our culture and organization and developed many talented people, he also possesses a unique leadership style and charisma.?

Ma, a former English teacher, founded Alibaba in 1999 to link Chinese suppliers with retailers abroad. It has expanded in consumer e-commerce with its Taobao and Tmall platforms, which are among the world?s busiest online outlets.

Ma is part of a generation of Chinese Internet entrepreneurs who built successful businesses in e-commerce, entertainment, search and other fields. In addition to Ma, several others have become billionaires, including Robin Li of search giant Baidu and Ma Huateng of Tencent, an entertainment and Web portal company.

Lu, who joined Alibaba in 2000, was the founding president of its online payment service Alipay and worked in Taobao, the company said.

Alibaba announced a reorganization in January to transform its seven business units into 25 smaller divisions to compete more effectively in China?s turbulent Internet market.

China has the world?s biggest population of Internet users, with 564 million people online at the end of 2012, according to an industry group, the China Internet Network Information Center.

The country trails the United States and Japan in total e-commerce spending but is forecast by the Boston Consulting Group to take the No. 1 position by 2015.

Study finds fat and bone mass are genetically linked

Obesity and osteoporosis should not be treated separately, Tel Aviv University researcher counsels

When it comes to body shape, diet and exercise can only take us so far. Our body shape and geometry are largely determined by genetic factors. Genetics also have an impact on our body composition including soft fat tissue and hard bone tissue and can lead to excess fat or osteoporosis.

Now Prof. Gregory Livshits of Tel Aviv University's Department of Anatomy and Anthropology at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, working alongside Dr. Michael Korostishevsky, has uncovered a clear genetic link between fat and bone mass. These factors, which contribute to bone metabolism, also affect Body Mass Index (BMI), which often serves as an indicator of overall health.

Reported in the journal Bone, this finding is a step towards understanding how these tissues are inter-related on a biological level, and will help doctors develop better treatment plans for patients dealing with fat or bone related pathologies. "When a patient is prescribed a medication, it is always important to know the potential side effects," says Prof. Livshits. As a result of this genetic connection, "a medication that is prescribed to treat obesity might have a negative impact on skeletal health," he says.

Connections forged in fat and bone

Previous studies revealed that osteocalcin, a protein produced by bone cells, has an impact not only on bone but also on fat tissue metabolism. The protein's function is associated with bone formation and bone mineralization. But recent data suggest that osteocalcin is also involved in the regulation of glucose and fat metabolism and that osteocalcin levels are lower in obese and overweight individuals. Prof. Livshits and Dr. Korostishevsky set out to determine the underlying mechanism of this osteocalcin link whether it was purely environmental or had a genetic basis.

The researchers conducted their study on a European population called the Chuvasha descendants of Bulgarian tribes that have lived along the Volga River for more than a thousand years. As a relatively isolated and ethnically homogeneous population, they are highly appropriate for the study of genetic effects. 1,112 participants over the age of 20 hailing from a total of 230 families were tested for variants in the osteocalcin gene. Genetic information was analyzed in connection with measurements that reflect body mass, including BMI, thickness of skin folds, reflecting the amount of fat beneath the skin and others.

"We discovered a statistically significant association between osteocalcin gene variants and measures of body mass, suggesting the involvement of this gene in body mass regulation," says Prof. Livshits. To check the reliability of their findings, they asked researchers at Tulane University in Louisiana to test the same association between genetic variants of the osteocalcin gene and body mass measurements in an extensive sample of 2,244 Americans of European background. The results revealed a very similar pattern.

Balancing treatment

Because the connection between fat and bone mass has been shown to be genetic rather than environmental, related issues can't be addressed separately, Prof. Livshits says. Bisphosphonates, for example, are effective agents for the treatment of bone mineral density loss and are therefore commonly used to treat osteoporosis. However, it is also important to know how this therapy impacts fat tissue. "After a few years of treatment that improves the bones, we don't want to discover that we have harmed the fat tissue in the process," he adds.

In parallel studies, the researchers are also investigating the FTO (fat mass and obesity-associated) gene, which has been shown to impact fat and lean body mass and is suspected to impact bone mineral density too. Their future research will explore the extent to which osteocalcin, FTO, and several other genes impact muscle mass in addition to fat and bone mass. It is important to understand the extent to which these genes contribute to interdependence of all major body composition components, says Prof. Livshits.

The Best Cosmetic Surgery Advice Available Today | The Blog ...

March 9th, 2013 by admin

TIP! Ask your doctor about their level of experience. See how many times they have performed your particular procedure and ask to see photos of prior patient?s results.

Some people do not believe that plastic surgery is useful and that only people who are vain are the ones who use it. This information is not accurate. People who?ve suffered from accidents or burns that have left permanent scars can use plastic surgery to improve their appearance and increase their confidence. Remember the tips in this article so you can make the best choice!

TIP! For smokers, quitting a month before having a procedure done is the wisest move. Some doctors will refuse to operate on you otherwise.

You can be selfish when thinking about your plastic surgery. That is to say that your own opinions should matter more than the opinions of other people. Taking the step to alter your appearance is a big deal. You need to be absolutely certain about your surgery, or you need to make another choice.

TIP! Try not to go to the cosmetic surgeon with only one fixed mindset on a specific procedure. An experienced specialist when it comes to cosmetic surgery could present you with various options that could meet your needs.

Remember, you will be paying quite a bit for the surgery and you may miss some work as well. For these two reasons, it is recommended to have a small savings set aside specifically for expenses associated with your procedure and post-op. This will allow you to relax and recover, instead of being concerned about money.

TIP! You need to educate yourself about cosmetic surgery procedures prior to going under the knife. Make sure you see the license of the surgeon that will be doing the procedure, as well as reviews from prior patients.

Talk to your surgeon and physician before the operation. Your physician should treat any question you have as important and be willing to go over his answer until you understand. This is the best way to select a trustworthy surgeon, help you relax and make an educated decision.

TIP! It?s important to inquire about credentials when deciding on your surgeon and procedure. Find out his background education, and if he has attended to any similar past surgeries.

You should consider your life overall before having any surgery done. If under a lot of stress or dealing with major life crises, they should reconsider the surgery. After their life calms down and they have had time to emotionally recover they can then think clearly about cosmetic surgery.

TIP! When you are looking at pictures of their work, you should know that these pictures are probably of the best surgeries that they have done. A surgeon who is exceptionally trustworthy may be willing to show you photos of patients who required additional corrections after their procedure.

Be sure you do not schedule your cosmetic surgery during times of high stress in your life. You will need a good amount of energy to properly recover, and feeling emotionally unwell can make things harder. Additionally, a lengthy recovery time might take a toll on your emotional health.

TIP! Communicate about your upcoming cosmetic surgery with your friends and family. Surgery of any kind requires the support of friends and family before and after the procedure.

Remember that all surgeries are accompanied by risk. You need to know everything involved, so be sure to discuss the dangers with your surgeon. While you want a positive outcome, it is never a good idea to forget that there are negative situations that could arise, too.

TIP! Be sure to review any options that do not require surgery first. It is costly to undergo surgery, and the recovery time is often hard.

Carefully research any potential plastic surgeon you are considering. Though many surgeons are qualified, if you pick the one bad apple, the consequences could be disastrous. Ask your friends and family if they know of a reputable cosmetic surgeon.

TIP! Although Botox is not actually considered cosmetic surgery, be sure that only a doctor performs the procedure on you. A lot of patients go to beauty salons for Botox injections from non-licensed beauticians.

Give yourself sufficient recovery time after your surgery is completed. Recovery time can last as much as four weeks based on your procedure. You may need to arrange to take sufficient time off of work. Don?t push yourself too much at the beginning.

TIP! Be sure to ask your surgeon any questions you may have. It is imperative that you understand what your doctor is saying, especially if it sounds complicated.

Think about what will happen following your procedure. If it is a major surgery, like breast augmentation, rhinoplasty or tummy tuck, you should have an aftercare plan in place before your surgery. These surgeries are a big deal and you ought to treat them that way. It is important that you take off the appropriate amount of time from work and get help from your friends and family to take care of daily tasks for you.

TIP! Organize your home so that it is easy to use before you have your surgery, so that you will not have to strain yourself during your recovery. For things you use all the time, put them where you can reach them without any problem at all.

Before getting any surgery done, ask a physician about anesthesia. There are many risks and complications that are associated with the use of anesthesia and you should ask about the kind, the amount and the possible side effects.

TIP! Do not allow yourself to be coerced into something you don?t need, or are not in the right mindset for at the moment. Many of the surgeries are very fast.

Blood loss is very common when you are going through plastic surgery. Keep in mind that excessive bleed may cause medical complications. Post-op bleeding is also something that needs to be discussed and understood. You may need corrective surgery if you have post-surgery bleeding under your skin. It is very important to talk to your doctor what you could expect when it comes to blood loss and bruising.

TIP! Speak to those who have had the procedure you are thinking about getting. They may tell you things that your surgeon has not made known.

It?s true that most cosmetic surgeons may not be interested in your health, but others could make suggestions that could leave you broke. There are dangers involved, so it is important to learn all you can about it. Keep this information in mind to help you make the best decision.

(AP) ? A police chief hired to rebuild a tiny Tennessee department dismantled by scandal is using a lie-detector test to keep racists off his force.

Coopertown Police Chief Shane Sullivan took over the department in November, becoming the 11th chief in as many years. He was hired on the heels of a series of police scandals that for a few months left Coopertown with no police at all. Years before that, a mayor was voted out of office after the local prosecutor accused him of racism and running a notorious speed trap.

Law enforcement experts say Sullivan's polygraph approach is unusual, though some departments use the devices for other purposes during the application process. Others try to root out bias in other ways. One polygraph expert warned that lie detectors can't accurately predict racism for reasons that include people's inability to recognize their own racism.

Sullivan said he doubts racists will even apply for the force if they know about the tests.

"I think the polygraph will definitely keep these people from applying," the 39-year-old chief said.

And he believes the policy is working, because he says it's already discouraged some applicants. "I've told a couple of ones about the polygraph who have not called me back."

Before Sullivan's hiring, the sheriff's department had overseen law enforcement in the town 30 miles northwest of Nashville while the department was temporarily disbanded.

First, the only full-time patrolman was fired over a road rage incident. Then the reserve officer was dismissed after a dashboard camera captured him using a racial slur to describe a black motorist. The dash cam video was later aired in the media. Soon after that, the police chief quit.

Coopertown Mayor Sam Childs said the chief resigned because of the "predatory media."

The rural community of about 4,000 people that is 95 percent white earned a reputation as a notorious speed trap, with about a third of its revenue coming from speeding tickets handed out by city police during the former mayor's tenure. In 2006, the National Motorists Association said Coopertown had one of the most "blatant examples of speed traps in the country." It stopped after a prosecutor filed a petition against the mayor in 2006. Its 25 squares miles encompass significant stretches of Interstate 24 and another highway that drivers use to cut through to Interstate 65.

In 2006, the county prosecutor asked a court to oust then-Mayor Danny Crosby on allegations he was running a speed trap and ordering police to target Hispanics, out-of-towners and soldiers from nearby Fort Campbell, Ky., for traffic tickets.

Although an appellate court agreed with a lower court's finding that Crosby's conduct and statements were strongly suggestive of "bigotry, sexism or utter foolishness," it refused to remove him. Crosby was later voted out of office and the speed trap is gone.

One lifelong resident said he's fed up with the city government and the police department making the town look bad.

"It's put a black eye on the city," Wayne Brown said of Coopertown's controversies. Brown, a mechanic and football coach, said he thinks there should be no city government or police department because they aren't providing any services.

"Other than writing speeding tickets, they don't do anything for us." Brown said of the department.

The new chief intends for his lie detector idea to help clean up the Coopertown's image. Candidates are required to answer whether they have ever committed a hate crime or a race-based crime.

"It doesn't ask if you've ever made a racist remark or slur," the chief said. Nor does the test ask people if they are prejudiced against any ethnic or religious minority.

Sullivan, who has taken the lie detector test himself, said he's hoping to establish a professional police department that can eventually provide 24-hour service seven days a week. Right now, he doesn't have the staff to police the town around the clock and leaves those duties up to the sheriff's office. He's already hired two police officers, both of whom have passed the polygraph, and he wants to add more. The department's budget is about $250,000 this fiscal year, Sullivan said, and the chief makes $41,000.

Bob Peters, a spokesman for the American Polygraph Association, said asking about factual matters is a better approach than using subjective questions about prejudice or racism. He says a polygraph can't accurately predict whether someone is racist.

"There might be people whom I might think have racist attitudes but they might not think so," said Peters, whose association has established best practices for use of the polygraph.

Peters says the new chief is using the best approach, and some voters are applauding him.

"I am very pleased with Chief Sullivan and the effort he is making to create a sound and secure police department for Coopertown," said Valorie Buck, chairwoman of the Coopertown Community Development Committee.

Malik Aziz, national chairman of the National Black Police Association, said the best way to keep bigots from being cops is through extensive background checks.

It's not unusual for police departments to use polygraphs on people before letting them join the force. Police applicants can be asked about past drug use or whether they have been involved in criminal activity.

"I haven't heard of any agency using a polygraph specifically geared toward eliminating racists from the application process," he said.

Sullivan says he's also using background checks to probe the racism issue.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department requires job candidates to undergo a voice stress test during the interviewing process, department spokeswoman Kristin Mumford said. Would-be officers are asked about bias during the test.

Voice stress tests are similar to polygraph tests, but instead of measuring heart rate and blood pressure, they detect changes in an applicant's voice pattern.

The department, she said, also uses an extensive background check and psychologically evaluates its job candidates.

"Polygraphs in and of themselves have a lot of problems," Hedy Weinberg, executive director of the ACLU of Tennessee, said.

Still, Weinberg commended the chief for the effort to bar racist applicants. But she thinks the best way for police departments to be accountable is by making sure citizens have their complaints of unfair treatment investigated.

Carolyn Murray, a professor of psychology at the University of California Riverside, supports other types of testing to detect bias, such as ones that use images of different racial groups and gauge reaction time when they are described as either "good" or "bad." Still, she applauded Sullivan's approach.

"If he's making this effort, he's making the biggest effort I've seen to date," Murray said. "You're not going to get everybody, but you will be able to stop a few people who would have been able to do a lot of damage to citizens."

Comet PANSTARRS rises to the occasion mid-March

Mar. 8, 2013 ? Comets visible to the naked eye are a rare delicacy in the celestial smorgasbord of objects in the nighttime sky. Scientists estimate that the opportunity to see one of these icy dirtballs advertising their cosmic presence so brilliantly they can be seen without the aid of a telescope or binoculars happens only once every five to 10 years. That said, there may be two naked-eye comets available for your viewing pleasure this year.

"You might have heard of a comet ISON, which may become a spectacular naked-eye comet later this fall," said Amy Mainzer, the principal investigator of NASA's NEOWISE mission at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and self-described cosmic icy dirtball fan. "But if you have the right conditions you don't have to wait for ISON. Within a few days, comet PANSTARRS will be making its appearance in the skies of the Northern Hemisphere just after twilight."

Discovered in June 2011, comet 2011 L4 (PANSTARRS) bears the name of the telescopic survey that discovered it -- the less than mellifluous sounding "Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System" which sits atop the Haleakala volcano in Hawaii.

Since its discovery a year-and-a-half ago, observing comet PANSTARRS has been the exclusive dominion of comet aficionados in the Southern Hemisphere, but that is about to change. As the comet continues its well-understood and safe passage through the inner-solar system, its celestial splendor will be lost to those in the Southern Hemisphere, but found by those up north.

"There is a catch to viewing comet PANSTARRS," said Mainzer. "This one is not that bright and is going to be low on the western horizon, so you'll need a relatively unobstructed view to the southwest at twilight and, of course, some good comet-watching weather."

Well, there is one more issue -- the time of day, or night, to view it.

"Look too early and the sky will be too bright," said Rachel Stevenson, a NASA Postdoctoral Fellow at JPL. "Look too late, the comet will be too low and obstructed by the horizon. This comet has a relatively small window."

By March 8, comet PANSTARRS may be viewable for those with a totally unobstructed view of the western horizon for about 15 minutes after twilight. On March 10, it will make its closest approach to the sun about 28 million miles (45 million kilometers) away. As it continues its nightly trek across the sky, the comet may get lost in the sun's glare but should return and be visible to the naked eye by March 12. As time marches on in the month of March, the comet will begin to fade away slowly, becoming difficult to view (even with binoculars or small telescopes) by month's end. The comet will appear as a bright point of light with its diffuse tail pointing nearly straight up from the horizon like an exclamation point.

What, if any, attraction does seeing a relatively dim naked-eye comet with the naked eye hold for someone who works with them every day, with file after file of high-resolution imagery spilling out on her computer workstation?

"You bet I'm going to go look at it!" said Mainzer. "Comet PanSTARRS may be a little bit of a challenge to find without a pair of binoculars, but there is something intimately satisfying to see it with your own two eyes. If you have a good viewing spot and good weather, it will be like the Sword of Gryffindor, it should present itself to anyone who is worthy."

NASA detects, tracks and characterizes asteroids and comets passing relatively close to Earth using both ground- and space-based telescopes. The Near-Earth Object Observations Program, commonly called "Spaceguard," discovers these objects, characterizes a subset of them, and predicts their paths to determine if any could be potentially hazardous to our planet.

JPL manages the Near-Earth Object Program Office for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington, DC. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.
